    Student Profile

    Toni Little, Class of 2011

    “Change” is a word Toni Little uses often in describing herself since coming to Johnson State College. When she enrolled as a freshman from New Britain, Conn., she was timid and unsure of her ability to succeed. Today she’s a role model for her peers and a shining example of what’s possible when you apply yourself and get involved on campus. A creative-writing major with plans for grad school and a career as a literacy specialist, Toni has made her mark at JSC as an honors student, student government leader, resident assistant, National Scholarship recipient (one of just 107 nationwide!), Dance Club member, campus activist, and a leader in JSC’s award-winning “Break Away” program of spring breaks devoted to community service. She’s traveled twice to New Orleans, organized campaigns against sexual violence, talked to inner-city youth about the value of college, and more — much more. As Toni puts it, “The experiences I’ve had at JSC have pushed me out of my bubble and allowed me to grow into a better person.” Given her ambitious plans and her commitment to make the world a better place, that growth is sure to continue.

    -GENERAL STUDIES

    -LIBERAL ARTS

    You’ll start off strong with the help of our First-Year Experience, a semester-long program of cultural and academic enrichment designed to help you find your place in the JSC community.

    And when you graduate, you’ll leave with a solid foundation for career success and civic involvement, a lifelong love of learning, and wonderful memories and friends.

    ACADEMICS AT JSC

    Our small classes, accessible faculty and emphasis on “real world” learning through research and service combine to deliver an education second to none.

    A SOLID CORE

    The general education core curriculum (GECC) at Johnson State introduces students to a broad range of liberal arts and science topics, all designed to provide a solid educational foundation and to create an informed and engaged citizen.
      The GECC is an important component of all programs at JSC and includes these requirements:
    • A First-Year Seminar (for students with fewer than 15 credits);
    • Two semesters of Creative Audience programming (through which students attend six or more events per semester);
    • Two lower-division courses each in writing and mathematics (fundamental skills requirement);
    • Seven lower-division courses in the arts and humanities, the natural sciences and the social sciences.

    EXPERIMENTIAL LEARNING

    Experiential learning, that is learning through direct experience, is at the heart of JSC academics. While the classrooms and studios at JSC are exciting places, where ideas are debated, questions are explored, preconceptions are challenged and minds are changed. We also believe that experience is a profound teacher. Experiential learning at JSC takes place across the curriculum and across all disciplines. Students participate in internships, fieldwork, hands-on research, student teaching and volunteer opportunities coordinated by our nationally recognized Serve program. Through these programs, students gain valuable skills, often in challenging work settings, and make important contributions to communities, businesses and organizations. And the experience and insight they gain in the process prepare them for the world beyond campus after they graduate.

    SUPPORT FOR NEW STUDENTS

    As a beginning student or a transfer with fewer than 15 credits, you’ll start off strong with the help of our First-Year Experience program. This interdisciplinary program of cultural and academic enrichment helps you build connections and find your place in the JSC community. You’ll choose a first-year seminar, participate in the campus-wide Common Reading Initiative, and attend performances, lectures and special events associated with our Creative Audience program. Just wait till you see how much fun learning can be.

    ATHLETICS AT JSC

    The Johnson State College Athletics Department offers competitive varsity programs for skilled student-athletes as well as recreational, intramural and wellness programs for all members of our community. Additionally, committed student-athletes have the opportunity to participate in 12 varsity NCAA Division III athletics teams.

    Student Athletic Profile

    Rob Key, ’11 • New Britain, CT
    I have been fortunate to play on the men’s varsity basketball team and build a strong relationship with our athletics program. Former upper-classmen challenged me to become a better athlete and prepared me to lead and challenge new team members not only to become better players, but to become well-rounded young men as well.

    FINANCIAL AID

    At Johnson State College, we offer a comprehensive financial aid program to help students who would otherwise be unable to afford a college education. Financial aid packages may consist of need-based grants and scholarships (which need not be repaid), low interest student loans and college employment in the federal work-study program.

    Johnson State College Scholarships

    The largest source of scholarships at Johnson State College is institutional merit scholarships. Institutional merit scholarships are generally awarded based on stated criteria such as grade point average, SAT or ACT score, or exceptional talent. Other scholarships may be awarded based on affiliation with a certain group, or interest in a specific subject area like math or science, etc. Need-based scholarships and grants are awarded based upon a student's financial need. Some scholarships are awarded based on both merit and financial need.
    Current full- and part-time students, new students and transfer students are invited and encouraged to apply for a scholarship.
