It’s not just a College…It’s a lifestyle

Located 20 minutes south of downtown Seattle in Des Moines.

Highline Community College takes pride in its diverse student body and offers events, programs and spaces that celebrate diversity and honor individual perspectives.

Highline Community College is one of the most diverse community colleges in Washington State

All students are encouraged to take part in campus activities, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Unity Through Diversity weeks.

Now in its 18th year in 2010, Highline’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week is one of Washington State’s largest Dr. King celebrations. It features a wide variety of speakers and performers including nationally known educators and documentary filmmakers. Around 750 students attend the annual Unity through Diversity Week, a series of social justice programming that explore and celebrate diversity of gender, class, race, sexual orientation, ability and religion.

“Highline’s campus has been nothing but receptive and open to the number of students coming from all different background and was one of the main reasons I decided to come here as a student.” student Ismail Yusuf

Highline also features:

· Speakers and events for Latino Awareness Month and Black History Month and leadership conferences, such as the Annual Student of Color Conference. The Annual Students of Color Conference, a statewide leadership conference for community and technical college students of color, examines issues of diversity and multiculturalism.

· Inter-Cultural Center (ICC), a lounge and resource center, where students can come together to explore multiculturalism and diversity issues. “The ICC is an environment that welcomes voices and opinions; where people are allowed to be the real them without getting shut down,” said Maureen Sumer, a Highline student.

· Students can also check out scholarship information, use the center’s computers and relax between classes. In addition, the center houses programs and discussion groups including Men of Vision, a men’s discussion group, and Sista’s Empower, a women’s discussion group.

The college’s commitment to multicultural understanding also spreads into classroom activities and course offerings.

The college offers a wide variety of Diversity & Globalism Studies courses that are open to all students. Students who pursue an Associate of Arts (AA) degree are required to complete a Diversity & Globalism class. All of these offerings, and more, make Highline Community College an excellent place for students to grow socially, professionally and academically.
