Why did you choose to attend your current school? Strong academic background, the type of education, the preparation it would give me for whatever field I would go into.
What is your school’s reputation for diversity? Not equal by any means, but they try to get diversity. They are known for not being wonderfully diverse, but not in a negative way. Diversity is pushed as is knowledge of differences. In the words of the school president: “The University of Chicago is distinctive in many respects, but perhaps in none more so than our singular commitment to rigorous inquiry that demands multiple and often competing perspectives. The nature of questions being asked and the perspectives being engaged are often a function of the diversity of experiences and outlooks of those participating.”
What’s the reality? How diverse is your campus? While in recruiting, we cannot get the MOST diverse group, no one is excluded. The end result of students IS very representative! Everyone is supported as well. Some resources include the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the Amandla Resource Center, and the LGBTQ Lounge.

Share some examples of how you experience diversity at your school. I do know that there are endless ways to be exposed to and to experience other cultures. The events provide insight into the experiences of other cultural groups. Such events can be an African Dance Group performance, the Chinese American Cultural show, Indian Food Study breaks, etc.
How comfortable do you feel on your campus? Very.
Is diversity discussed at your school? There are many opportunities to discuss diversity, but it is not pushed on people. It does not need to be. The students WANT to explore differences between cultures.
What types of opportunities are there to learn about or celebrate diversity?

How aware of diversity do your professors seem to be? Can you recall any diversity issues that were brought up in the classroom? Has anything “great” or “offensive” happened diversity-wise? No, we do not separate ourselves much by race, so it does not manifest itself much. The professors are very aware though.
Do your classes include books or opinions from a diverse range of experts and authors? Yes very much so! They want to teach appreciation of knowledge and multiple views. It is the best way!
How does the school administration support diversity? They embrace it and push it and want students to be able to understand one another. They want everyone to feel safe and included.
If you could go back in time, would you choose to attend the same school? Why or why not? Yes, it’s the best way to get the education with the best people.
What do you like best about your school? The opportunities you have to do anything you want. The diversity of opinions. The quality of education. The love of learning!
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? More short-term study abroad opportunities.
What else would you like potential students to know about your school? VERY nerdy and hard, but VERY much worth the work.
