Today there are laws and acts in place to make sure that all citizens are included in the higher education system. Please note Minority Recruit addresses a few of those laws below.

IDEA ’04
Signed into law in December 2004, by President George W. Bush when he re-authorized the initial act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act protects the educational rights of students with disabilities with emphasis on strengthening services to assist students in transitioning from high school to the next phase of educational experiences.
ADA (PL 101-336) Americans with Disabilities Act
Signed into law in July 1990 by President George W. Bush Sr. bars discrimination in employment, transportation, public accommodations and telecommunications by extending the right to access beyond the original Rehabilitation
Act (504) that primarily emphasizes physical access.

ATA Assistive Technology Act
Signed into law in October 2004 by President George W. Bush
programs and/or services that give access to new technology and the ability to view, test and select new devices encouraging the use of and access to technology that provides people with disabilities the ability to work, go to school and be a part of the community through technology’s inherent ability to remove obstacles for the impaired and/or challenged in our society.
LRE Least Restrictive Environment
A government mandate under law to design Special Education programs and services that do not isolate or disenfranchise those with disabilities from the general education curriculum or classroom.
IEP Individualized Education Program (3-21 years)
FAPE
Free Appropriate Public Education
Law that prevents parents with children requiring special education services (individually assessed and determined) from being charged fees to cover the additional educational costs of providing assistive services to a student (pre-school through secondary education) with special needs.
Related Services: Professionals outside of the direct realm of education who provide related services in assistive technology, audiology,
occupational and physical therapy, school health services, speech and language pathology and other related services (Deutsch- Smith 2007)
