The University of Saint Mary is a Catholic co-educational applied liberal arts university founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. USM educates students of diverse backgrounds and inspire them to realize their God-given potential. At USM, we prepare our students for values-centered lives and careers that contribute to the well being of society.
Established in 1923, USM today is a fully modern co-educational university with 25 undergraduate programs, six graduate programs, online programs, and a wealth of pre-professional health programs, offering classes at three Kansas City-area locations. Courses are offered in traditional daytime, evening accelerated, and online formats.
USM has over 900 students in its traditional, graduate, and evening programs. With small class sizes and a student-teacher ratio of 11-1, you’ll receive personal, one-on-one attention from professors who are experts in their fields. And you’ll be called by name everywhere you go on campus, from the business office, registrar’s office, to your classes.
What’s more, our academic programs have earned national recognition. For the past six years, The Princeton Review has honored USM as a “Best Midwestern College” based on the university meeting high standards of academic excellence as well as positive feedback from students, parents, and educators.
Students also participate in service-learning projects, programs that teach you important educational, life, and career skills, while you to give something back to the community.
Student Life
Students live in two residence halls just a short walking distance from classrooms and campus workout facilities. The newest residence hall opened in fall 2009 with apartment-style suites featuring private bedrooms and cable and high-speed internet access. USM also features a wide variety of activities and clubs for students.
Arts Information
As an art student at USM, you'll explore the range of your art talent through one-on-one instruction and mentoring from the USM art faculty. You will also benefit from the guest artists brought in from around the nation to exhibit their art in Goppert Gallery. Design your own degree around USM's strong Fine Arts core and choose from three areas of concentration.
USM's music program is designed to provide opportunities to develop musicianship, cultivate understanding and appreciation for the art of music, and prepare for musical leadership, teaching and performance. At Saint Mary, music students have two paths to choose from: instrumental music and vocal performance.
Study Abroad
The University of Saint Mary offers students the opportunity to travel abroad to study for a summer, a semester, or a full year. Through our partnerships with other universities and colleges, it is possible to study at various locations around the world.

Athletics
