    University Mission

    As the sole comp rehensive public research university in the state’s system of higher education, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has the threefold mission of:

    -providing for the instructional needs of New Jersey’s citizens through its undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs;

    -conducting the cutting-edge research that contributes to the medical, environmental, social and cultural well-being of the state, as well as aiding the economy and the state’s businesses and industries; and

    -performing public service in support of the needs of the citizens of the state and its local, county, and state governments.

    Diversity

    For Rutgers, the premier public research university in New Jersey, diversity is an everyday ingredient of university life and one of our greatest strengths. Rutgers’ diversity—and there are all kinds, from age to sexual orientation to ethnic background to whether you grew up on a farm or city block—reflects the rich array of people who choose New Jersey as the place to build a better future. At Rutgers, we know we all benefit when we live, learn, work, and just spend time with lots of different people. We also know the value of removing ourselves from the familiar, leaving our borders, and immersing ourselves in the new. Diversity at Rutgers embraces the notion that we must be global educators, researchers, students, citizens, and partners—transcending boundaries to meet the challenges of a complex and interdependent world.

    Academics

    First-year undergraduate seminars with leading scholars. International executive M.B.A. programs in Beijing and Shanghai. Groundbreaking research that improves the way we live. Academic excellence, in areas as diverse as philosophy and public policy, built on a core foundation in the arts and sciences. At Rutgers, academics are about personal achievement, cutting-edge discovery, and community involvement, with students and lifelong learners selecting from a diverse array of possibilities at campuses in New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden.

    Student Life

    Arts Information

    Rutgers offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in dance, theater and visual arts and Bachelor Music (B. Music) as well as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in these areas. The BFA and B. Music degrees are offered at the Mason Gross School of the Arts (http://mgsa.rutgers.edu), an arts conservatory within a major public research university. Here, you’ll master your craft while learning how art intersects with politics, sociology, psychology, and more. Rutgers artists, grounded in both art and academics, are thinking artists. With fewer than 1,000 undergraduates in its conservatory program, Rutgers is an intense creative community. The super-low student-to-faculty ratio—only 5:1!—guarantees personal attention from master teachers. Students benefit from:

    • a faculty of working artists committed to placing graduates within the professional ranks;
    • internships and other career connections at cultural institutes and arts organizations from NYC to DC to London; and
    • the opportunity to combine fine arts training with liberal arts studies for careers in theater management, arts administration, music education, and more.

    Athletics

    We have nearly 50 Division I, Big East, and Division III sports teams on our campuses. Show your school spirit and root for Rutgers on the football or baseball field, basketball court, or even the golf course. At Rutgers you can do more than watch; you can become a player yourself. Rutgers supports an extensive athletics program, including intramural sports, sports clubs, fitness, aquatics and more. Try your hand at a new game or keep competing in an old favorite.
